about

During the lockdown I've spent a lot of time in Second Life for meetings with friends. We find the audio so much better then the video conferencing tools, and just a more comfortable environment to chat in than Zoom.

We hang out by this fire pit on the beach on the beginner island. We can all sit around on this circular stone bench.

When we meet we talk about lots of different things, but are usually loosely focused around the future of the live music industry and conventions around music making.

I've been testing this idea of Platform Determinism, which suggests that the places we share and present our artistic work has a role in informing the work itself.

I've been wondering what music would be made in Second Life with this in mind. I performed this track at a Utilipub event in Second Life. To perform it, I used only my trackpad on my laptop - with no video element, there was no need to make the performance visually striking with my tools. I didn't really need to perform anything live at all, the audience wouldn't have known. But I think the music was easier to compose as a performance rather than through a back and forth editing process.

While composing the stems for the song, and mixing them in the performance, I was thinking about an interaction I had with a stranger in SL. A friend had messaged to say there was someone riding a horse on the beach, so I jumped in immediately - for some reason this was extremely exciting for me. As I arrived she was trotting away from the fire pit, so in a panic a chased after them to see them. She was very friendly when I spoke to her, and probably a bit startled by my introduction.

I've seen horses before. I've seen people riding horses before. But for some reason seeing an avatar of a human riding an avatar of a horse really struck me. It was a really lovely moment, and confusing at the same time.

I get the feeling We are not as used to communicating online as we think we are yet.
